The Power of the Infinite Consciousness

Day 89

The Power of the Infinite Consciousness

Rama questioned Vasistha about the existence of sages and wise individuals in the world, as well as the concept of god.

The Dynamics of Cosmic Power

Vasistha explained that the power or energy of the infinite consciousness, constantly in motion, determined the nature of all events in the universe. This power, known by various names such as Mahasatta, Mahaciti, and Mahasakti, endowed every object with its inherent qualities. However, this power was not separate from the absolute Brahman but rather an integral aspect of it.

Verbal Distinction vs. Ultimate Unity

While sages made a verbal distinction between Brahman and its power, in reality, they were inseparable, akin to the relationship between a body and its parts. The awareness of this inherent power was termed niyati, or divine dispensation.

The Ordained Nature of Existence

Vasistha clarified that even Rama's questioning and his subsequent actions were ordained by niyati. However, he emphasized the importance of self-effort, as niyati operated through and alongside human endeavor.

The Dual Aspects of Niyati

Niyati manifested in two aspects: human and superhuman. Human niyati resulted in the fruition of self-effort, while superhuman niyati operated independently of human actions.

The Role of Self-Effort

Vasistha warned against idleness and dependence solely on niyati, highlighting that life itself was inherently tied to action. He encouraged the pursuit of the highest state of super consciousness, where liberation could be attained through the greatest self-effort.

Unity Beyond Division

Ultimately, Vasistha emphasized the unity of consciousness and its power, akin to the inseparability of waves from water or limbs from the body. Any division perceived was merely an illusion of the ignorant mind.

In this discourse, Vasistha illuminated the interplay between cosmic power and human endeavor, emphasizing the ordained nature of existence while highlighting the importance of self-effort on the path to liberation.
