Day 201 - The Story of Bhusunda

Introduction by Vasishta

Vasishta, one of the revered sages, narrated a fascinating tale to Rama about Bhusunda, a crow who embodied longevity and enlightenment. Vasishta shared his visit to Mount Meru, a mythical mountain described as radiant and divine, where he sought the company of this extraordinary bird.

Creation and Origins

In the infinite consciousness of Brahma, a mirage-like world appearance exists. Brahma, the creator, resides there, and Vasishta, his mind-born son, recounts his experiences. While in Indra's heaven, Vasishta heard from sages like Narada about beings with remarkable longevity. Sage Satatapa narrated the tale of Bhusunda, a crow dwelling on the Cuta tree at Mount Meru, known for his extraordinary life span and wisdom.

The Wish-Fulfilling Tree

Mount Meru houses a wish-fulfilling tree, Cuta, with leaves of gold and silver. The tree's branches extend toward the sky, and celestial beings fill the atmosphere with their songs. Birds of various kinds inhabit this tree, including the famous swan of Brahma, the fire-god's bird Suka, and the peacock of Kartikeya. Among them, the most notable is Bhusunda, an enlightened and peaceful crow who has lived through numerous world cycles and retains memories of ancient times.

The Encounter with Bhusunda

Inspired by the stories, Vasishta set out to meet Bhusunda. Upon reaching Mount Meru, he witnessed the mountain's radiant beauty, akin to a yogi who has opened the psychic portal at the crown of the head. The peak, reaching up to heaven, was adorned with the majestic Cuta tree. Vasishta saw various birds, including the swan of Brahma and the peacock of Kartikeya, before finally encountering Bhusunda.

Bhusunda’s Wisdom and Longevity

Bhusunda sat in tranquility and peace, his presence serene and enlightened. He was free from desires and aversions, embodying the qualities of an enlightened being. Bhusunda’s wisdom and long life were unparalleled, making him a revered figure in both heaven and earth. He had witnessed countless ages and remembered ancient beings, yet remained silent and humble.

Mount Meru’s Enchantment

Vasishta's description of Mount Meru is vivid and enchanting. The mountain, adorned with precious stones, shines like the radiant yogi. Its summit, touching the lunar sphere, is covered with fragrant flowers and humming bees. Celestials dwell in the mountain's grottos, enjoying its divine beauty and tranquility.

Bhusunda’s Nest

Bhusunda's nest on the Cuta tree is a haven of peace and wisdom. It is described as a place free from sorrow and filled with the scent of various flowers. Bhusunda, with his profound mind and serene appearance, sat quietly, witnessing the course of ages and recounting the revolutions of the Kalpa cycles.
