The Genesis of Illusion and the Nature of Reality

Day 88

The Genesis of Illusion and the Nature of Reality

Rama inquired once more, seeking a succinct explanation of how the illusion of 'I' and 'the world' originated without any cause.

The Unity of Infinite Consciousness

Vasistha elucidated that all things were indwelt by intelligence, emphasizing the oneness of the infinite consciousness. He used analogies such as gold and a bracelet to illustrate the inseparability of the universe from consciousness.

The Emergence of Illusion

Within infinite consciousness, there was a latent non-recognition of its infinite nature, manifesting as the notion of 'I' and 'the world'. Just as a sculpture exists within marble before being carved, the world existed in potential within consciousness.

The Illusory Creation

From this inherent potentiality, the universe unfolded gradually, with space, air, fire, water, and earth emerging successively. Time also evolved from an infinitesimal unit to cosmic epochs, all within the realm of illusion.

Reality Beyond Illusion

Despite the appearance of creation, the infinite consciousness remained unaffected, devoid of beginning, middle, or end. It was the ultimate reality, ever awake and enlightened. Vasistha emphasized that true realization came from recognizing consciousness as the absolute Brahman.

The Dual Nature of Reality

Vasistha described the world as both real and unreal, akin to wind being perceived as real in motion but non-existent in stillness. The mirage-like appearance of the world existed within Brahman, similar to the sprout within the seed.

Liberation from Bondage

The notion of 'I am this' was identified as the sole bondage, and liberation came from transcending this notion. Those who recognized the infinite consciousness as the substratum of the universe achieved victory over samsara.

In this profound discourse, Vasistha expounded on the nature of illusion, the essence of reality, and the path to liberation, offering timeless wisdom to Rama and all seekers of truth.
