The Story of Prahlada

Day 163

The Story of Prahlada

Introduction

Vasistha's Narration

O Rama, here’s another story showing a smooth path to enlightenment.

The Mighty Demon King

Hiranyakashipu’s Rule

In the netherworld, Hiranyakashipu was a powerful demon king. He ruled the three worlds after defeating Indra and had many sons. Among them, Prahlada shone like a diamond among jewels.

The Downfall of Hiranyakashipu

Pride and Arrogance

Hiranyakashipu’s pride and aggressive rule worried the gods. They prayed to Brahma for help. Lord Hari, as Narasimha, destroyed Hiranyakashipu with his terrifying power, causing the demons to flee in fear.

The Aftermath

Prahlada's Response

After the destruction, Prahlada performed the funeral rites for his family and consoled the wounded. He and the surviving demons were stunned by the devastation.

Prahlada's Reflection

Contemplating the Future

Prahlada pondered their situation: the demon families were destroyed, and the gods now ruled their realm. His relatives were destitute and miserable, and the demons had become weak and fearful.

The Power of Vishnu

Realization of Divine Protection

Prahlada realized that those protected by Vishnu are not oppressed. He saw that the gods, under Vishnu’s protection, harassed the demons. He decided to devote himself completely to Vishnu, chanting "Namo Narayanaya" for protection and blessings.

Becoming One with Vishnu

Embracing Divine Identity

Prahlada understood that true worship of Vishnu means becoming one with him. He declared that he was Vishnu, embracing all his divine attributes and powers. He imagined himself bearing Vishnu’s symbols and identified with his divine splendour.

Transcendence of Duality

Achieving Unity with Vishnu

Prahlada transcended duality and became one with Vishnu. He saw himself as the universe's sustainer, evil's subduer, and fear's dispeller. This self-identification with Vishnu brought him peace and power, making him invincible and revered.

By embracing Vishnu’s qualities and consciousness, Prahlada achieved unity with the divine, showing the power of devotion and realizing one's true self beyond dualities.
