Day 184 - Examples of Liberated Beings

Day 184 - Examples of Liberated Beings

Diversity of Enlightened Ones Vasishtha tells Rama that many liberated beings exist in the universe. They include:

  • Kings like Janaka and Dilipa
  • Rulers like Manu and Mandhata
  • Demon-kings like Bali and Prahlada
  • Sages, gods, and even some insects

He emphasizes that the self exists in all beings, regardless of their form.

The Nature of Reality

Paradoxes of Existence Vasishtha points out that:

  • There's emptiness in solid things and substance in empty space
  • What seems inappropriate might be appropriate on deeper inspection
  • People often do good out of fear, not true righteousness
  • Sometimes contemplating nothingness leads to understanding everything

Attaining Liberation

The Path to Freedom Vasishtha advises Rama:

  • Liberation is always possible, everywhere
  • It can be easy or hard, depending on one's wisdom
  • One should strive for inner peace through non-attachment
  • Self-effort and right inquiry are crucial for reaching self-knowledge

Characteristics of a Liberated Sage

Living in Wisdom A truly liberated person:

  • Sees the world as if in a dream, without craving
  • Lives in the present without clinging to past or future
  • Acts without personal motive
  • Adapts to all situations while remaining inwardly detached
  • Speaks wisely but simply
  • Is unmoved by success or failure
  • Understands the temporary nature of all things
  • Doesn't react with extreme emotions to anything

The End of Illusion

Permanent Awakening Vasishtha concludes by saying:

  • Once true wisdom is gained, ignorance doesn't return
  • The liberated sage sees the world arise in their own consciousness, like a dream
  • They remain equanimous in all circumstances

This teaching emphasizes the possibility of liberation for all beings, the importance of self-effort in spiritual growth, and the profound equanimity and wisdom of those who have realized their true nature.
